CCRD and Work Based Learning

College-Career Research & Development, Work-Based Learning

College-Career Research & Development (CCRD) is focused on career development, planning, and exploration. The CCRD program prepares students with the academic, technical, and workplace skills that will enable further education and/or employment in a career field upon graduation from high school. This program consists of in-school courses, a portfolio development project, and mentored workplace experience.

Work-Based Learning (WBL) activities involve actual work or volunteer experience and connecting classroom learning to work. WBL is an all-encompassing term that includes apprenticeships, capstone work experience, and internships. Supervised WBL is designed to provide meaningful work experience as an integral part of the regular CTE curricula, which requires partnerships involving the education system, business and industry, community agencies and organizations, and the family.

Introduction to College-Career Research & Development
This course provides students with instruction in Maryland’s Career Development Framework, including self-awareness, career awareness and exploration, workplace readiness, and financial literacy. The goal of the course is to provide students with basic career development instruction in order to assist them in identifying a career pathway that is a good fit for their interests, skills, and abilities. Students will begin a portfolio to document their career goals, skills, interests, and pathway planning. This course may be used as an elective course for students who are seeking other completers.

Advanced College-Career Research & Development
This course requires students to apply their career development knowledge to further their career preparation. The course explores all aspects of a career, including transitions, advancements, and job satisfaction. Advanced financial literacy, including personal budgeting is taught. Students continue to develop their portfolios. Advanced CCRD is taken concurrently with Work-Based Learning to provide the opportunity for students to apply classroom learning in a workplace setting during their senior year.

CCRD Work-Based Learning Experience
This course requires students to apply their career development knowledge to a work experience in a career area of their choice. Students’ skill development is measured by an individualized learning plan and related reflections. Emphasis is placed on workplace readiness skill development. Some students may become registered as apprentices. The completer requires work-based learning. MSDE requires students to complete a minimum of 135 work hours if one credit is needed and a minimum of 270 work hours if two credits are needed to meet the requirement for the completer. Students are not permitted to use service learning or court-ordered hours for WBL.
